Let’s be real: your success as a freelancer or business owner isn’t just about your skills and expertise; it’s also about the clients you choose to work with. One toxic client can derail your entire operation, draining your energy, wasting your time, and jeopardizing your reputation.
The good news? Bad clients often wave red flags before they even sign on the dotted line. You just need to know what to look for. This isn’t about being cynical; it’s about self-preservation. It’s about protecting your peace of mind, your time, and your business.
Ignoring the warning signs is like ignoring a leaky faucet: it might seem like a minor inconvenience at first, but eventually, it will flood your entire house and cause major damage. Learn to spot the red flags early and you will save yourself a world of pain.
Here are some red flags to watch out for and what to look out for from the start:
- They Demand a Discount Right Off the Bat: If a potential client starts haggling over price before even discussing the project details, it’s a major red flag. It signals that they don’t value your expertise and that they’re more concerned with saving money than getting quality work.
- They Have Unrealistic Expectations: If a client’s expectations seem wildly out of line with the project budget, timeline, or scope, proceed with caution. They may be setting you up for failure.
- They’re Vague About Their Goals: If a client can’t clearly articulate their objectives or their vision for the project, it’s a sign that they’re disorganized, indecisive, or simply don’t know what they want.
- They’re Overly Critical of Your Work: Constructive feedback is essential, but if a client is constantly nitpicking your work, questioning your decisions, and focusing on minor flaws, it’s a sign that they’re difficult to please.
- They’re Bad Communicators: If a client is unresponsive, unreliable, or generally difficult to communicate with, it’s a sign that they’ll be a pain to work with.
- They Have a History of Disputes: Do your research. Check online reviews, ask for references, and see if the client has a history of disputes with other freelancers or businesses.
- They Disrespect Your Boundaries: Clients don’t listen to you or think you have value. They also can be looking to take advantage of you.
I remember in my journey I talked to Priya about a red flag she said she had experienced in web design:
Priya’s Tale of the Never-Ending Edits:
“A client contacted me,” Priya said, “demanding a very high performance website, but was low-balling me. He was just there to do nothing. Then, came out of nowhere and went to trash me over the design so it was all bad!
What I wish I did then, but will remember now, is for me to refuse the work. I just wanted the money. Now looking back it would have been better to refuse that, rather than do this. You need to not believe everything you’re told.”
This is some knowledge you would never think about, and this is what is so needed when you become a freelancer.
Another red flag that needs to be looked at is all about people taking your time, it is as simple as looking at those in the past. The more you look the better it is to determine if it is even worth trying at all.
Akash knew that there needed to be steps to show that he has the best interests at heart. What could be done, to make what is needed, and to prevent the red flag? This will be told in our story.
A story from my friend: a freelance developer
As he was going on with his career he had to work hard. He was struggling to get clients, or he had a client that had disappeared one day. Now he just lost a job and does not know what is to come. He needed to keep things on track. He was then starting a call that he would not accept clients, that would make him run all over the place and it had nothing to do with creativity.
What we found out was that there was a family emergency and it made him disappear. He had said that all of the assets would be paid to his contractors as necessary. He also did this so clients that were too crazy would just leave him alone!
What you must do is:
- Know that things will happen
- What you’re doing can get scary
- You must value yourself
Story from my friend – web designer Sanjana
“One time, I was working for a client, and they were not paying. What was really horrible though was that their vision was not clear and they didn’t want to commit to any of my design decisions, but was willing to critique with little value. It seems like they were trying to take advantage of me.
What needed to be done to get me safe was for me to pull out and never work with him ever. He did this for a multitude of times, and I just needed to finally see that it’s not on me, it’s on him.
That to be safe and that to be good to myself.
So never take in new things, that you did not agree to.”
Story from my friend – marketing specialist Priya
“One time I got into the industry, there was so much that was done, and I had a boss that I trusted. I went along and did the best that I could. All I wanted to do was get my time.
Then things went bad and my clients started to do me dirty, even after years of work for them. When I was ready to do the right thing I felt like things would all work out.
Then something happened that helped me realize why I was getting all of these bad clients. All my marketing was based on saying how good I was! The strategy did not take into account my time, my skill or my value. Because they did not value me, I did not value myself. I’m telling you, start by valuing yourself today so you are at the peak.”
I have had so many clients take what I have, and it is sad.
