Stop Throwing Money Away! These 7 Sneaky Spending Habits Are Draining Your Bank Account (and How to Fix Them Now!)

Alright, let’s get something straight. If your bank account is constantly looking like it’s gone through a tornado, you’re not alone. Most of us, myself included, have this annoying habit of throwing money away without even realizing it. It’s like we’re all starring in our own personal financial tamasha (spectacle), where money magically disappears faster than gulab jamuns at a wedding feast. If my bank account were a Bollywood movie, it would be a horror flick, where all my hard-earned money is being chased by some invisible, money-eating monster, and there’s no hero in sight to save the day. I used to constantly wonder where all my money was going, and why my bank balance always seemed to be so low. It was a mystery that I was determined to solve.

My existence was like that old Indian saying, “Aankh se ojhal, pet mein hazam” – out of sight, into the stomach, which is a humorous way of describing how we tend to ignore things that we don’t see, and then complain about it when it’s too late. I was working hard, doing my best, but my bank balance always felt as though it was playing a game of hide and seek with me, and always hiding in the wrong places. I was looking for ways to make my money go further, but I never really took the time to stop and think about where all my money was going. I needed to do something differently, I needed to break these spending patterns, and I needed to do it now!

My quest to fix my finances began, as most of my quests usually do, with a lot of frustration, a cup of strong chai, and a dash of good old-fashioned self-reflection. I wasn’t trying to become a financial guru overnight; I was simply trying to understand my spending habits, and find ways to plug all the financial leaks. I needed a practical and simple solution, something that wasn’t complicated and that I could start using immediately. I was determined to find those sneaky spending habits that were draining my bank account, and I was determined to stop them once and for all.

My “aha” moment came while I was helping my didi (elder sister) with her online budget. She was always complaining about being broke, and every month, she had no idea where all her money had gone. We went through her bank statements together, and that’s when I discovered the hidden culprits behind her (and, let’s be honest, my own) financial woes: Those sneaky little spending habits that were quietly sabotaging her bank balance. They were all hidden in plain sight, but I had to look closer to see them clearly. It was like discovering a hidden code that had been right in front of me all along.

So, I started analyzing my own spending habits, and that’s when it hit me – we’re all guilty of these sneaky little financial traps that drain our bank account without us even realizing it. It was like that scene from a detective movie where the investigator finally puts the clues together, and finally discovers who the villain was. And the culprit was, our own sneaky little spending habits!

And that’s why, today, I’m here to share these 7 sneaky spending habits that are likely draining your bank account, and the fixes for them:

    1. The “Convenience Tax”: Ordering takeout multiple times a week might seem like a small indulgence, but the cost adds up. The Fix: Cook at home more often, even just simple meals, and pack your own lunch.
    2. The “Subscription Trap”: Those unused subscriptions for streaming services, apps, or magazines? They are quietly stealing your money every month. The Fix: Review your subscriptions regularly and cancel what you don’t use.
    3. The “Impulse Buy Bandit”: That random purchase while waiting in line at the grocery store? Those “deals” that seem too good to pass up? They add up over time. The Fix: Avoid impulse purchases, make a list and stick to it when you go shopping.
    4. The “Coffee Shop Habit”: The daily coffee or chai run might seem harmless, but it’s actually a major drain on your budget. The Fix: Make your own coffee or tea at home and take it with you.
    5. The “Small Change Thief”: Those small, everyday expenses like parking fees, or little knick-knacks? They might seem insignificant, but they are a silent thief. The Fix: Track your small daily expenses, and see where you can cut down.
    6. The “Sale Siren”: Those tempting sales that make you buy things you don’t need. You think you are saving money but you’re just spending unnecessarily. The Fix: Avoid shopping when you are bored and make a plan before you go to the store.
    7. The “Neglect Factor”: Simply not paying attention to your spending, and never taking the time to review your bank statements. The Fix: Check your statements regularly, understand where your money is going, and make the right adjustments.

By cutting out these sneaky habits, I was able to save a significant amount of money each month. My bank balance went from a constantly stressed state, to a more relaxed and calm one, and I was finally able to take control of my finances. It wasn’t magic; it was a combination of awareness, planning and discipline.

The key here is that you don’t have to be a financial expert to take control of your finances. It’s all about identifying the bad spending habits and then replacing them with more strategic choices. It’s about becoming more aware of how you spend your money, and then making small changes that add up to a big difference.

And that’s where I, at abdulvasi.com, come in. If you’re also tired of throwing money away and want to take control of your finances, I can help you break free from these bad spending habits.
